How to Write Emails in an AI-Summary World
Your emails are getting summarized by AI before your donor ever opens them which means your opening lines matter more than ever. Here’s what to do:
Rule #1: Don’t bury the lead.
Bad: I’m reaching out today because...
Better: Thousands of families could lose access to food this month.
Lead with the point.
Rule #2: Answer three questions immediately:
What's happening?
Why does it matter?
What should I do?
If those aren't clear in the first paragraph, rewrite it.
Rule #3: Move the ask up.
Many nonprofits wait until the bottom of the email to ask for support. AI summaries may never get that far.
Rule #4: Write your first sentence like a headline.
Think: Congress is considering cuts that could impact millions.
Not: I wanted to take a moment to update you.
Rule #5: Put key facts early.
Numbers.
Deadlines.
Impact.
AI is looking for signals that help explain the message. Give it something to work with.
Rule #6: Use simple language.
The clearer the email, the better the summary.
The better the summary, the more likely someone engages.
Rule #7: Make every paragraph earn its place.
If a paragraph doesn't add urgency, emotion, proof, or action...
Cut it.
A simple formula:
Lead with the issue.
Explain the impact.
Make the ask.
Tell the story.
Not the other way around.
The future of email isn't writing for AI. It's writing so clearly that both AI and humans understand your message immediately.
